The African Energy Commission (AFREC) is a special agencyof the AFRICAN UNION (AU) and has the responsibility of expanding, coordinating and harmonizing energy policies with the aims, among others, of enhancing energy security, boosting social and economic development and promoting the rational and sustainable use of energy resources in the African continent.
In order to fulfill its mandate, and with the understanding of the need of better and more comprehensive energy statistics, AFREC has firstly developed the African Energy Information System (AEIS), which contains a series of databases (Energy Statistics, Biomass and Hydropower, efficiency indicators).
Recognising the importance of high-quality data for African decision makers and with the goal to track and set global sustainable energy and climate goals (e.g. SDG7), AFREC has is continuously improving its service delivery on data collection, validation and dissemination.
